Training simulator of Jan De Nul’s Joseph Plateau

The Project

Jan De Nul Group contracted Tree C for the development and delivery of a Subsea Rock Installation Simulator for its headquarters in Capellen in Luxembourg.

The simulator is used for personnel training of the subsea rock installation vessel Joseph Plateau and its sister vessel Simon Stevin. With a rock carrying capacity of 31,500 tonnes, these fall pipe rock installation vessels are the largest of their kind in the world and two of the few vessels equipped for rock installation up to water depths of 2,000m.

Our Solution

The simulator is designed for interactive training of SRI operators in the most realistic conditions. It provides training facilities for a wide range of operators and skills including the Fall Pipe operator, Surveyor, Operations’ superintendent and the Ship’s electrician. All the corresponding monitoring and control functions are operated from dedicated consoles equal to the ones on board. To this end Tree C sourced the equipment from the same original manufacturers, Ingeteam (ES) and Seatools (NL).

• ROV control
• Use of vertical fall pipe or inclined fall pipe
• Rock profiles with Interactive soil model
• Detecting faults, introduced by the instructor

Hardware in the loop simulation

By integrating the actual control desks of the rock installation system, the operator trainees will be able to gain experience in operating the SRI vessel with the same process information as on the actual ship. Since the consoles are identical and connected to high fidelity physics based simulation, this simulator also provides JDN the ability to validate software and hardware updates for the actual control desks onboard the vessel, in a virtual and thus safe environment.
